Standing on the Edge: The Leap from Safe to Self-Employed Coach

Over the past 18 months, alongside my full-time work in education, I’ve been gradually developing my coaching practice and nurturing the dream of becoming a full time coach.

I completed an ICF accredited coach training programme with the brilliant and highly respected Optimus Coach Academy, and since then, I’ve clocked up over 60 hours of coaching practice with a wide range of clients. I have begun to find my coaching niche in supporting parents and educators – people navigating change, challenge, and the constant balancing act of supporting others while trying to stay grounded themselves.

Along the way I’ve learnt that to make it as a professional coach, you also need to become skilled in running a small business. So I’ve also invested time to learn this side of things, attending development sessions with Business Gateway Scotland and the NatWest Accelerator Programme. These have helped me develop Calaldh Coaching into a realistic and impactful coaching offer.

All of this feels like it has led me to the edge of a precipice. Do I stay on this side, and try to develop coaching within my current role in education, steady and safe? Or can I make the leap into self-employment, into full-time coaching, into uncertainty, but also into possibility?

As The Clash asked all those years ago, “Should I stay, or should I go?”

And I’ve realised, with some irony, that the best way to explore this question… would be to have some coaching myself.

Because coaching isn’t just for leaders or executives. It’s for teachers navigating their next career step. For parents juggling work, family, and identity. For anyone who wants to feel more confident, more impactful and happier with their life choices.

So today I am committing to undertaking some coaching to help me move forward.

If you’re standing on your own precipice—whether it’s a career shift, a parenting challenge, or simply a desire to feel more like you again—I’d love to support you.
